This National Volunteers Week we join in to celebrate the power of volunteering to change lives and look at how it’s making a difference on our doorstep.
Volunteers play a crucial role at Westway CT, significantly advancing our mission to reduce social isolation and promote inclusivity. Our six dedicated volunteers, who drive everything from community minibuses to volunteer cars, generously donate their time and skills to help our passengers get the most out of community transport.
As a non-profit community transport provider in West London, Westway CT provides accessible services to both groups and individuals. Each week, we transport passengers, with our shopper bus service being particularly popular among older residents. This service ensures they can safely reach their favourite local shops. Once a month, we offer trips to garden centres and country pubs, providing a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of London’s busy streets. These outings, along with our volunteer car service—where members can book rides to see friends or attend GP appointments—are driven by volunteers like Tim and John.
Community transport is the backbone of our local community
Tim, one of our volunteer drivers, says, “If you’re thinking about volunteering, know that you can make a difference.”
After retiring from a career as a lawyer, Tim now drives for our regular shopper bus, outings, and volunteer car service. He finds joy in the flexibility and the impact he makes, helping people get more out of their community by helping them to hold on to their independence by getting out more. Tim values the appreciation from Westway CT and the passengers, and his efforts were recognised with the RBKC Mayor’s Award in 2021.
John, another volunteer driver, has been with us for 10 years says:
“There is no typical day.”
Whether driving someone to an appointment or engaging with other volunteers and staff, John enjoys the diversity and fulfilment that volunteering brings. His advanced driving skills and community spirit led him to Westway CT, where he finds satisfaction in helping a well-run organisation that provides essential support to those who would otherwise struggle.
Volunteering at Westway CT not only enriches the lives of our passengers but also brings immense personal fulfilment to our volunteers. It’s a rewarding way to stay engaged, meet new people, and make a tangible difference in the community.
