What makes a town thrive? An article in The Guardian Society’s section explores five key ingredients, including transport, public services, thriving high streets and community cohesion.
It raises an important question: what good are local opportunities if access isn’t equal? Because you’re elderly, lack confidence or need extra support to get out?
Our mini buses make connections everyday so we see how the ability to get out and about supports much more than mobility. It can help people, maintain independence, meet others and continue to take part in everyday life – not to mention the health benefits – both physical and mental, that maintaining your independence offers.
During a recent round-table discussion, one passenger told us:
“Socialising is the key… it is about staying connected with people, seeing people.”
Another said:
“I prefer to choose what I want.”
These comments capture two aspects of a thriving community: connection and choice.
Community transport is one part of the wider infrastructure that helps make both possible. It connects people with the places and services they need, while helping them maintain the relationships and routines that give everyday life meaning.
When we talk about thriving communities, we should think not only about what a place offers, but whether people can reach it, participate and feel part of it.
That’s the role Westway CT is proud to play, alongside hundreds of Community Transport providers up and down the country, day in and day out.
