We often talk about transport as a way of getting from A to B. But getting to an appointment isn’t always straightforward, particularly when services move further from where people live or public transport doesn’t provide a practical route.
Recent work from Age UK and The Older People’s Commissioner for Wales highlights just how important that connection is.
Age UK London’s Out and About campaign describes transport, public toilets and other local facilities as community infrastructure: the things that enable people to leave home, connect with others and maintain the relationships that matter to them.
At Westway, this is something we see every day. We also work closely with Age UK Kensington & Chelsea, giving us a valuable insight into the practical barriers that can make getting out and about more difficult.
And sometimes those barriers are surprisingly ordinary.
A bus route that no longer runs.
A stop without somewhere to sit.
Information that’s only available online.
A journey that feels too complicated.
Or simply losing confidence in travelling independently.
Age UK’s Travelling Companions programme is particularly interesting because it recognised that sometimes people need more than a transport option. They need support to build confidence and make that first journey, whether that’s to a local club, activity or service.
The healthcare connection is equally important. Research by the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales found that 53% of older people surveyed said it was difficult to get to their GP practice using public transport.
These findings reinforce something we see every day at Westway.
Transport isn’t simply about movement. It’s about access.
Access to healthcare.
Access to shops and essential services.
Access to friends, activities and community.
Access to the opportunities that help us remain independent and connected.
Community transport has an important place alongside mainstream public transport. It provides the additional support, accessibility and flexibility that some people need to make everyday journeys possible. And this is why we do what we do, access is everything.
