The Connection Is The Value.

November 3, 2026

The community is already there. We’re helping people be part of it.

In a recent article for The Guardian, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown explores what he calls Britain’s “civic recession”: the decline of some of the clubs, associations and organisations that have traditionally brought people together.

His argument is that the erosion of our social infrastructure deserves as much attention as the decline of our physical infrastructure.

It’s an important point, and one that resonates with the work of community transport.

What happens when someone can no longer get to their local group, attend a regular class, visit friends or take part in an activity they enjoy? The opportunities may still exist, but without accessible transport they can become increasingly difficult to reach.

Yet across our communities, countless groups, charities and organisations continue to create opportunities for people to meet, participate and support one another.

At Westway, we work alongside these organisations, helping transport their members so they can keep meeting, enjoying activities and maintaining valuable connections.

We see how much these connections matter. Our services help people access appointments, go shopping, enjoy social activities and stay involved in community life. But the impact goes beyond the journey itself.

Community transport is part of the social infrastructure that helps communities function. It connects people not just to places, but to opportunities, relationships and a sense of belonging.

If we want stronger communities, we must think about how people can participate in them, and what practical support makes that possible.

A community isn’t simply a place where people live. It’s a place where people can take part, contribute and belong.

The vehicle is the means. The connection is the value.
