What can the unwritten rules of public transport teach us about community?

An interesting article published recently in a Spanish newspaper for ex pats unpacked the unspoken rules about public transport etiquette. Give people space. Offer a seat if someone needs it. Keep the noise down. And remember you’re sharing the journey with other people.

It got us thinking about the bigger lesson.

Travelling together requires a little consideration. You make room. You notice when someone might need a hand. You accept that not everyone travels in the same way. Sometimes you even have a conversation with someone you’ve never met before.

None of these things is remarkable. But collectively, they make shared spaces more welcoming.

We see this every day through community transport.

Our Shopper Bus is more than a way to get to the supermarket. It’s familiar faces, conversations and a regular connection to the community.

Our excursions are more than getting somewhere. They’re shared experiences and opportunities to spend time with others.

And when we provide accessible transport for local community groups, we’re helping create the spaces where people can meet, participate and support one another.

This is why we see community transport as part of community infrastructure.

Transport helps determine who can take part in community life. And once people can get there, something else happens: people connect and feel included.

Perhaps the simplest lesson is this:

Communities work when we make a little room for one another.
