We tend to think about transport in practical terms: getting someone from A to B.

Research into community transport has explored how the vehicle can become an informal “third place”, somewhere outside home where people encounter others and experience connection.

We see this at Westway.

Our Shopper Bus is about getting to the supermarket, but it’s also about familiar faces and conversation. Our excursions are about visiting somewhere new, but they’re also about shared experiences.

Our passenger feedback reinforces the point: 62% had felt isolated or lonely at least some of the time before using our transport, while 88% of those who had experienced loneliness said our services helped prevent those feelings.

That’s why we see community transport as part of the social infrastructure that helps communities function and thrive.

Because mobility isn’t only about movement. It’s about participation and connection and that leads to happier and healthier communities for everyone.
