Bringing People Together For Connection & Community

June 16, 2026

This week marks both Loneliness Awareness Week and The Great Get Together, two initiatives that shine a light on something fundamental to our wellbeing and quality of life: connection.

Across the country, local groups, charities and volunteers will be bringing people together through events, activities, conversations and shared experiences. While the activities themselves may differ, the purpose is the same: helping people feel connected, included and part of their community.

At the heart of The Great Get Together is a simple but powerful idea: that we have more in common than that which divides us.

It’s a message that feels particularly relevant today.

Our communities are made stronger by the diversity of the people within them – people of different ages, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. When people come together, share experiences and take the time to connect, those differences become a source of strength rather than division.

We see this in our work everyday – in the conversations that start on the Shopper Bus. We see it when community groups travel together on our minibuses. We see it on excursions, where people meet new people, build friendships and enjoy experiences that might otherwise be out of reach.

Transport is often viewed as a practical service, but what it enables is much more than a journey. It’s really about participation, belonging and connection.

At a time when loneliness and social isolation continue to affect many people, it is encouraging to see communities across the UK creating opportunities for people to come together and celebrate what unites them.

Because strong communities are not built by organisations alone. They are built by people – neighbours, volunteers, local groups, charities and community champions – each playing their part.

This week is a reminder that connection matters, diversity enriches our communities, and that we are stronger when we work together.
