Volunteering For Better Mental Health

May 13, 2026

There’s increasing discussion about the importance of community connection and the role volunteering plays in helping create it. This Mental Health Awareness Week (11 – 17 May) – the theme is action -taking practical, everyday steps to support better mental health.

One of the most powerful actions we can take is connection.

A recent article about a reader in The Guardian explored this, reflecting on how contributing even a small amount of time can foster a stronger sense of belonging and wellbeing. What resonated most was the idea that volunteering does not need to be all-consuming to be meaningful; it can fit around people’s lives, rather than the other way around.

That is very much the approach we see through community transport.

At Westway Community Transport, our volunteer drivers help people remain connected to their communities; getting to appointments, activities, shops and social opportunities that might otherwise feel out of reach. But the value of volunteering flows both ways. It builds relationships, strengthens local ties and gives people the opportunity to play an active role in supporting the place they live.

And we know that flexibility matters. Many of our volunteers give their time occasionally and around other commitments. Even a few hours makes a genuine difference.

Community transport exists because people choose to support one another, and that collective effort quietly strengthens communities across our borough and the UK every day.

If you can give some time a week or a month to help drive our passengers to appointments that matter to them,  please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you – and we will reimburse fuel costs. Call us on : 0208 964 4928 or take a look at more information here.
